The Federal Transit Administration in 2020 awarded the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) a discretionary grant under the Mobility for All Pilot Program. DRPT sought funding for a two-part project aimed at improving transportation information access for Virginians.

The project launched in October 2021 as a stage one One-Call/One-Click System, which includes web pages dedicated to providing complete information about transportation services in the Commonwealth of Virginia and a consolidated statewide GTFS directory that supports trip planning for public transit.

VirginiaNavigator, a nonprofit organization, Trillium Transit, a leader in GTFS development, and Kimley-Horn, a planning and design engineering consultant, are key partners for this project.

Transportation Navigator
As part of its Mobility for All project, DRPT worked with VirginiaNavigator to develop a series of informational resources designed to provide the public with comprehensive transportation information under the umbrella moniker “Transportation Navigator.” Transportation Navigator includes transportation tabs on the VirginiaNavigator family of websites, including VirginiaNavigator.org, disAbilityNavigator.org, SeniorNavigator.org, and VeteransNavigator.org, and a widget (above) that can be used to find transportation providers in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The widget can be placed on any website -- hosted by a state agency, transportation provider, nonprofit, community partner, business, or other organization -- that wants to help connect citizens to transportation providers in the Commonwealth. Statewide GTFS Initiative
DRPT makes General Transit Feed Specification files (GTFS) available through the Virginia GTFS clearinghouse. The clearinghouse includes links to feeds that are maintained by transit agencies and other partners.

DRPT also makes the data available through ArcGIS Online as an interactive map that highlights fixed-route transit services across the Commonwealth.

What is GTFS?
The General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) is a data specification that allows public transportation agencies to publish their transit data in a format that can be used by a wide varietyof applications. The data specification contains components that include schedule, fare, and geographic transit information. The standard also allows for areal time component that contains arrival predictions, vehicle positions and service advisories.
